Slimbridge 1 (Wellon 19)

Headington Ams 0

Headington's Amateurs’ title hopes were dashed when they lost by the narrowest possible margin to Slimbridge, who were crowned Division 1 West champions.

Three teams started a dramatic final day level on points, separated only on goal difference.

Headington were the outsiders of the three. They needed to beat Slimbridge and hoped that the third team in the equation – Wootton Bassett – would slip up at Easington.

In the event, Will Wellon’s first-half goal was enough to give Slimbridge the title, while Wootton scored seven minutes from time to beat Easington 2-1 to claim runners-up spot.

So Headington had to settle for third place after an excellent season.

At Slimbridge, a tense andoften nervous performance from both sides was nonetheless compelling to the end.

The hosts were on top in the first half, but Headington came back very strongly after the break.

On a tricky surface, Joe Tustain rattled Headington's crossbar with an early header from Wellon’s free kick.

Headington responded with Klaus Buckle heading just wide from Adam Simmonds’s cross.

The only goal came when Wellon timed his run to perfection before shooting past Headington keeper Harry Jenkins.

As Slimbridge got on top, Jenkins twice pulled off fine stops from Ben Wood and Tustain, while Benji Cuff deniedMarvin Roberts with a last-ditch tackle.

Knowing that only a win would give them a chance of the title, Headington gradually cranked up the pressure in the second half.

But Slimbridge never wilted, the outstanding Leon Sterling marshalling their defence, and they were always dangerous on the counter-attack.

Simmonds and Buckle both went close for the visitors, who had a strong penalty appeal turned down on the hour As time ran out, the Amateurs threw everything into attack, but their efforts were from distance as Slimbridge took the match and the title.

Launton Spts 4 (Lissiter 21, Scourfield 65, 80, 83)

Cirencester Utd 1 (Jack 29)

Launton’s end of season resurgence under the management team of Jason Allen and Arran Hodges continued with a resounding victory at home to the bottom club.

Paul Lissiter put Launton ahead, but Callum Jack equalsided within eight minutes.

However a second-half hat-trick from Dan Scourfield settled the outcome for Launton, who finished the season inh style.

They may have finished second from bottom, but Lwanthave expressed a wish to continue in the Hellenic League next season, especially as there will be no relegation from Division 1.

To stay in the league, Launton say they desperately need more cash.

Therefore, the club are urging any interested individuals or businesses to come forward with help and financial suppoert.

The club’s annual meeting is being held at Launton Sports & Social Club on Sunday May 23, starting at 12.30pm
