Oxford & District’s Katherine Hawes helped England’s women retain the Clara Johns Trophy in the British Isles Indoor International Series at Perth.

Hawes played in captain Sandy Hazell’s rink of Barbara Bellamy (Torquay United) and Hazell’s Swale teammate, Sian Gordon, as England racked up a clean sweep of wins over Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

A three-shot defeat for Hawes’s four couldn’t stop England storming to a 132-96 victory over Wales in their opening clash.

The Oxford ace and her rinkmates bounced back with a comfortable win in the 48-shot victory over Ireland to set up a trophy decider against Scotland.

And England got off to a flying start to silence the singing of the noisy home supporters at a packed Dewars Centre.

The hosts had no answer and were blown away 126-94, with Hawes’s side recording their second win.

Hawes, who with the exception of three years has been an ever-present for England in the annual event since making her debut in 1994, said: “It’s always nice to be part of the team that wins, and especially nice to win it in Scotland.

“We managed to get a good start and kept the spectactors quiet which made a change.

“It is normally between ourselves and Scotland.”

After a slow start, Hawes was satisfied with her own form.

“In the first game I thought I struggled,” she said.”You always like to play a bit better and then I settled down and was not too bad in the second two.

“Sian Gordon, who was our new cap, I thought played extremely well in all three.”

Now Hawes turns her attention to the outdoor season, and has targeted a place in the England team for the British Isles International Series.

“I want to get back in the international team, so I am waiting to hear if I get a trial,” she added.
