Carterton 1 (Lewis 37)

Witney Utd 2 (Odhiambo 65, Smith 70)

A spectacular 25-yard effort from Dean Smith completed an excellent turnaround for Witney United in Saturday’s west Oxfordshire Premier Division derby (FTL Futbol Hellenic league).

The home side, belying their lowly position, took the lead eight minutes before the break when Andrew Styles was robbed of the ball by former Witney favourite Kevin Lewis, who calmly rounded young keeper Eddie Dale and fired home.

Witney had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Chris Harper appeared to be bundled over in the box by Jamie Butt However, after 66 minutes, United equalised when a free-kick by Smith was helped on by Lee Henderson, and Anaclet Odihambo controlled well before firing home.

Five minutes later, Witney clinched a second successive away success when Smith charged down a clearance and set himself before giving James Domm no chance from 25 yards.

Malmesbury Victoria 1 (Cox 67)

Wantage Tn 2 (McKeon 16, Austin 35)

A Wantage side, weakened by the loss of four regulars, struggled to overcome determined Malmesbury on a bobbly pitch.

Wantage took the lead when Tom Rowe fed his striking partner Sean McKeon, who shot past goalkeeper Martin Woodhouse.

The visitors’ keeper Rob Durrant saved well from Chris Cox, before Wantage made it 2-0 with a well-placed free-kick from Rowe, after Malmesbury’s joint manager Kevin Coles had upended Matty Biddle.

With Coles driving them on, the hosts rallied strongly in the second half and pulled a goal back through Cox.

Good defending helped Wantage survive an awkward spell before they finished on top.

Shortwood Utd 4 (Baldwin 27, Axton 52, Casey 73, Green 89)

Hook Norton 1 (Smith 8)

Hook Norton fell away after producing a gallant first-half display against the high-riding hosts.

The lowly visitors took the lead after eight minutes with a volley from Jason Smith.

But Shortwood responded with an equaliser from James Baldwin.

Hooky keeper Joe White bravely carried on after a head wound was heavily bandaged, and they were still level at half-time.

Shortwood took charge in the second half, however, scoring at regular intervals through Alton Axton, Ross Casey and Matt Green.

Hooky’s young and inexperienced side acquitted themselves well, especially with three 17-year-olds and a 16-year old on the pitch, but had a hard time dealing with balls constantly flying into the box.
