The Oxfordshire-based Bootleggers produced an impressive display in the Capetown Tens.
Bootleggers, who are managed by Oxon referee Anthony Swift and were coached by Oxford University director of rugby Steve Hill, were pipped at the quarter-final stage in South Africa.
Drawn in the tournament’s Premier Division, Bootleggers, who included former Dark Blues Willem Klopper, Chris Haw and Dave Fenlon, defeated University of Capetown 19-14 and only lost 14-12 to a Western Province invitational team.
With 15 seconds of the quarter-final remaining, they led national club champions Hamiltons 14-12, only to lose to a last-gasp try.
