Calgary Bay looks set to be given the go-ahead by trainer Henrietta Knight to take on Kauto Star and Denman in next month’s totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The seven-year-old, from Knight’s West Lockinge stables, near Wantage, was due to carry top weight in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster last Saturday.

But the meeting was lost to frost, and now Calgary Bay – an impressive winner at Town Moor before Christmas – looks set to head straight to chasing’s blue riband on Friday, March 19.

Knight said: “He's entered in the Gold Cup and I know it's dominated by the big two, but there may not be many runners and he's very likely to run.

“The opportunities for him before that are very small as he will not race properly right-handed, so that is a waste of time.

“He’s rated 153 and I can't find any suitable opportunities for him left-handed, which is very depressing.

“He’ll now probably go straight to Cheltenham and then on to Aintree, and I think he has the mark of a Grand National horse.

“All being well he’ll go for the National in 2011.”
