Teeanger Patrick Lay, from Bampton, finished second in the Easykart E Plate Championship – his final race of 2009 at the Clay Pigeon Raceway in Dorset.

But the runners-up spot saw the 14-year-old crowned junior Easykart Vice Open Plate champion.

Lay missed the first qualifying session due to wet conditions, and although the track was dry for the second session, an incident on lap four meant he had to retire.

So Lay had to start in 12th on the grid for pre-final.

With engine problems, Lay struggled in the opening laps, but managed to move up to seventh place at the end of the 15-lap race, setting the fastest lap in the process.

Starting on seventh for the final, Lay was again held back at the start by engine problems, but by lap 17, moved up to third place.

A lap later, Lay took over second place with a superb manoeuvre, and he held on to second to secure the junior title.

Lay said: “It was a really tough race. I’m sure with one more lap I could have won it, but to finish second in the Open Plate and to win the junior championship makes this my best season so far.”
