Banbury Utd 2 (Redknap 64, 90)

Nuneaton Tn 1 (Dillon 44)

George Redknap was Banbury United’s hero with a late winner at a blustery Spencer Stadium in the Premier Division on Saturday in the Zamaretto Southern League.

Banbury rode their luck against a top class Nuneaton side, and had to come from behind to snatch all three points.

The visitors started strongly, using the conditions well to put Banbury on the back foot.

Joe Murrell did well to save a Mark Noon effort in the ninth minute.

The visitors kept the ball on the ground as much as possible, and taunted Banbury with their slick inter-passing game.

Banbury’s first chance came in the 37th minute when Jack Ashton’s corner was met by Redknap, and his glancing header missed the far post by inches.

But it was only a matter of time before Nuneaton went ahead, and they did so a minute before the break.

Top-scorer Chris Dillon latched on to a defence-spiltting pass to slot past Murrell from eight yards.

With a double substitution at the break, Banbury’s fortunes started to turn.

They equalised in the 64th minute when Adam Learoyd put David Stone clear on the right.

Stone laid the ball back to Redknap, who slotted home from five yards.

In the 71st minute, Ben Milner gave away his fourth penalty in three games when he handled in the area, but Rob Oddy hit the spot-kick wide to let Banbury off the hook.

Banbury regrouped again, and Learoyd was the provider for the winner in stoppage time.

He put Redknap clear with a ball over the top and the makeshift Banbury striker lifted the ball over the Nuneaton keeper into the net.
