Oxford United’s youth team striker Aaron Woodley says he is delighted after signing a three-year professional contract with the club.

The 17-year-old former Radley Youth star has already made two sub appearances for United’s first team and has been snapped up before any rival clubs think about making a move for him.

Woodley, who is from Abingdon, has been with Oxford United since he was nine, after being spotted when playing for Radley.

He said: “It has been a whirlwind since the season started.

“I scored a few goals early on, was asked to step up and train with the first team, then had a taste of playing senior football with a couple of substitute appearances.

“To top it all off and be offered the chance to sign as a professional is really exciting and I am happy to get this chance at such a great club.”

United manager Chris Wilder said: “He’s done well, but this is just the start for him. He’s got to make sure he works hard now.

“We’re obviously looking after both Aaron’s and the club’s interests.

“It’s something he’s des-erved and has come possibly earlier than he thought it would do, but as I’ve said to him, the hard work starts here, he’s now got to go and earn his next contract.

“He’ll still be a youth team player, but he’s one we think has got a future and one that’s been developed by Les and the youth development department.”

Woodley has a shin injury at the moment, which rules him out of today’s FA Cup tie against Thurrock.
