Sandy Bolton’s superb summer reached a new high point when he won the BB&O Amateur Championship at Burnham Beeches.

The 17-year-old, from Abingdon, shot three 69s and a 68 to land the title by two strokes from defending champion Ashley Walton (Frilford Heath).

And it came just after Bolton starred for Scotland in the Boys Home Internationals at Hankley Common, winning two and halving the other of his singles matches.

“To be county champion is definitely my best achivement,” said Bolton.

“Because I came from the Home Internationals, where I played well, straight into it, I was feeling confident with my game.

“I was three behind going into the last round, but then shot five under on the front nine to take the lead.

“I was playing with the leader after three rounds, James Brockington from Henley.

“I knew if I beat him then I would win it. Everyone else was three or four shots behind me.”

Walton shot a 67 in his final round to leap into second, but it was Bolton’s consistency that proved crucial in his five-under-par total.

Bolton, whose home club is Goring & Streatley, has also won the Magnolia Park championship this summer and finished fifth in the Scottish Boys’ Open.

Of his progress, the plus-two handicapper said: “I have practised a lot on my wedges.

“I’m getting it a lot closer from 100 yards away and that’s making my scores better.”

Bolton’s remaining events this season include captaining the BB&O in the EGU South East Group junior foursomes at Thetford from August 26-7.

He hopes to turn professional in due course and will be working at a driving range over winter to earn money.

Bolton said: “Because I will be too old for the under 18s with Scotland, next year I’m hoping to get into the under 21 squad, which will be a big step up.”

As for where he can improve, he added: “It is just about staying focused in the last stretch.

“When I got into the lead last week, I learnt a lot about my game and how I perform under pressure.”

Tadmarton Heath’s Liam Robinson finished seventh at Burnham on 285, while Dean Newbold (Frilford Heath) was 15th on 301.
