New Oxford United striker Jack Midson has set himself an ambitious target – to match last season's 20-goal tally.

Such is the competition for places up front with the U's that none of the strikers – even James Constable – is a certainty to start every match.

And Midson began United's last pre-season friendly, against QPR, on the bench.

But he took just two minutes to find the net after coming on in the second half, to add to his goals in previous pre-season friendlies at Oxford City and Greenock Morton.

Midson, who combined work as a tennis coach with playing for part-timers Histon last season, made it to 20 goals in his first full season at Conference national level.

And he said: "I'd like to match that total this season, but you've got to try and pin down your position first if you're going to look at how many goals you're going to score.

"My main aim is to become the regular striker here, but you don't just walk in.

"I've got the No 10 shirt, but that doesn't mean to say I'm up there."

The 26-year-old striker, who has played for Stevenage, Dagenham & Redbridge and Bishop's Stortford, believes the U's should do well this season, which begins on Saturday week at home to York City in the Blue Square Premier.

"With the organisation, the fitness, and the strength of this side, we should be able to be strong competition for most sides," he said.
