Oxfordshire turned the form book upside down by thumping Minor Counties Western Division leaders Cornwall by 116 runs at Challow & Childrey.

Leading by 165 with six second innings wickets remaining overnight, they took their total to 278-7 dec, setting their opponents 343 to win in 60 overs.

And despite a valiant century by Dan Davis, they finished well short at 226 all out.

Rob Williams and Richard Kaufman, 29 and five not out respectively overnight, took their fifth-wicket stand to 167 before the latter was run out for 83, having hit ten fours and a six.

Two wickets fell cheaply, but Williams reached a splendid 107, with 14 fours, before the declaration came at lunch.

Cornwall, unbeaten with two wins and a draw from their three matches, reached 56 thanks to openers Matt Robins and Antony Angove before off-spinner Paul McMahon strruck to remove both.

He also accounted for Keith Parsons cheaply and when skipper Tom Sharp was run out without scoring, Cornwall seemed in dire straits at 75-4.

Davis, however, looked in prime form after his first-innings 93 and appeared determined to win it for Cornwall on his own.

He featured in stands of 62 with Gary Thomas and 63 with Chris Hunkin, but when he was caught behind by Ian Hawtin off McMahon – his fourth wicket – for 114, it made the score at 216-7 and the writing was on the wall.

Davis cracked 18 fours and two sixes in his century, which came off 102 balls.

The last three wickets went down for just ten runs, all to the spin of Kaufman, who finished with figures of 3-32.

He dismissed the last two batsmen, one of which was old Oxford Blue Michael Munday, in successive balls.

Ironically, Kaufman was only called into action when Damian Shirazi pulled up in the middle of his sixth over with a hamstring strain.

McMahon’s analysis was an impressive 23-8-82-4.

Oxfordshire’s first triumph of the season will see them climb the table, while Cornwall remain top as their closest rivals, Dorset and Cheshire, were rained off for their entire three days of their match.
