Oxford United boss Chris Wilder has urged all supporters to get behind his team – after some failed to join in the celebrations when Matt Green netted against QPR on Friday night.

A number of fans have found it hard to forgive Green, it seems, for leaving the U's and joining Torquay 12 months ago.

But the striker is now back at the Kassam Stadium on a season-long loan from The Gulls, and giving it his all for Oxford.

And Wilder says the club needs everyone to be together if United are to be successful this season – and that means ALL the fans.

It was in the second half that Green won a spot-kick, and then grabbed the ball to show he wanted to take the penalty.

He buried it past Czech keeper Radek Cerny to bring the U's their first equaliser in the 2-2 draw.

“That was real bottle from Greeny to take the penalty. He put himself on the spot there,” Wilder said.

“I was interested to see what the reaction was, and turned around and saw a few of our fans not clapping. I can't get my head around that.

“I want us to be together.

“Matt was excellent, he was aggressive, he got in behind them, he linked up well with Beano (James Constable), and he caused them problems.

“He really put a shift in.

“You could see when he grabbed the ball for the penalty how much he wanted to get going for this football club, and he should be applauded.

“If we're going to do something this season we need everyone – players and fans – to be together.”

United gave an improved second-half performance after QPR had looked the more dangerous before the break.

But Wilder said it is only to be expected that some players will take time to find their feet.

“There's a few players who are feeling their way into the football club, and a few who've not played a lot together.

“The new ones have had a lot thrown at them at the moment, and it's a lot to take on board.”

Wilder has been delighted with how pre-season has gone so far, both the Scottish tour and the tough test against QPR.

“We’ve got two weeks now to really get down to hard work.

“We were delighted with everything that happened on the tour. It exceeded our ambitions of what we were trying to achieve.

“Players have come together, produced decent performances, had some great days’ training and got to know each other’s characters.

“Now the business really does start in terms of formulating a side for the first game of the season.”
