Chris Wilder is delighted that former Oxford United centre back Andy Melville has returned to the club as a coach.

The ex-Welsh international, 40, who made 159 appearances for the U’s in the 1990s, before having spells at Sunderland and West Ham, has joined on a short-term deal.

Boss Wilder said: “It’s great to have him on board. He’s a vastly experienced defender and played over 700 games.

“I spoke to him at the benefit day for the youth team, when he also played, and asked if he would like to help us out on the coaching side.

“We’re very excited that he’s agreed to come here. It’s no big deal, he’s just helping us out. He’s back in the area.”

Melville said it was great to be back in football.

“I’m in the middle of taking my coaching badges. I’m here as a YTS coach! I’m also looking to help Oxford United progress. I’m very excited about it,” he said.
