A dismal batting display from Oxford saw them crumble to an 89-run defeat at Potters Bar in Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 1 on Saturday.

Their prospects were looking bright as a superb bowling performance from Stuart Hole and Francois Vainker had restricted Potters Bar to a less than formidable 191-9.

However, in reply, Oxford managed just 102, with spinner Shaftab Khalid the chief destroyer with 7-26.

Not one batsmen in Oxford’s horrow show made more than 20 runs.

Hole, who finished with 4-45 from his 18 overs, had both the openers caught by Todd Hutcheson, but Tanweer Sikandar and Chris Swainland added 47 for the third wicket to leave the visitors poised at 104-4 at lunch.

However, after the interval, Potters Bar found runs hard to come by.

Veteran Rupert Evans caught and bowled Swainland, before Vainker, who finished with figures of 3-35 from his 14 overs, had Jared Norman caught by Jamie Perkin without scoring.

Then Stuart Laudat removed Shaftab Ali.

Hole then mopped up the tail as Potters Bar reached 191-9.

In reply, though, Oxford just never got going as Shaftab Khalid wreaked havoc among the hosts’ batting.

Openers Chris Sandbach, and Jason Harrison went cheaply before Stuart Laudat’s wicket left them reeling at 15-3.

Nick Ferraby and Perkin staged a mini revival.

But it was all in vain as Oxford lost wickets at regular intervals as their hopes of ending their winless run came to a disappointing conclusion in Hertfordshire.
