They don’t come much bigger than this.

Oxford United know that nothing less than a win will do against Histon if they are to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Midweek results were disappointing, in that all of their rivals chalked up victories.

But most of the scores were expected, especially Kidder-minster’s easy win at Woking just 48 hours after the Cards had a tough run-out against Cambridge in what proved Phil Gilchrist’s last game as manager.

It’s what happens from now on that is interesting, as so many of the teams at the top start playing each other.

The U’s simply have to beat Histon, though, to stay in the hunt, and Steve Fallon’s outfit are a good side.

I thought they played some very good football when they inflicted on Oxford their heaviest defeat of the season in that 5-2 horror show at the Glassworld Stadium last November.

However, Histon – who beat both Swindon Town and Leeds United in the FA Cup this season – have been much less effective on their travels than at home, losing their last two away games, both 1-0, at Kettering and Barrow.

Yet they have still scored 32 goals away from home, more than any other side, hammering in five at Weymouth – when they were a decent side – and four at both Grays and Salisbury.

And they will be full of confidence after Tuesday’s 3-0 win at home to Mansfield.

Just as they lifted the team at Stevenage, so can the Oxford fans inspire Wilder’s men to victory tomorrow.

Adam Chapman reckons United have better fans than half the clubs in the Football League.

The on-loan Sheffield United player thought they were out of this world in their backing for the team last Saturday.

And that support makes the 19-year-old, who has not yet played for the Blades senior side, want to stay with Oxford.

“The fans were absolutely brilliant,” he said after the 1-1 draw at Broadhall Way.

“I’ve not been involved with League clubs, but there can’t be many League clubs with support like that.

“People talk about fans being a 12th man for a team.

“In this game they were our 11th man after the 24th minute.”

There were nearly 2,000 Oxford fans at the game, and many Championship teams have not taken that kind of support to an away game this season.

The versatile Chapman, who featured in Northern Ireland Under 21s’ 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Porta-down on Tuesday, is set to slot in at right back against Histon, when Damian Batt serves a one-match ban.

Wilder will have no worries about that, however, after Chapman dropped back to defence following Batt’s dismissal last weekend.

“Chapman was up against a good player second half,” he said.

“Mitchell Cole is possibly the best winger in this league and I thought he wrapped him up. He didn’t give him anything, apart from one cross-shot, and broke forward – and didn’t sit back. He attacked with purpose and got us the penalty.”

Chapman said: “I was told to just support Lewis (Haldane) and let him run, but I thought ‘head down’ and run a bit.

“I don’t know if it was a penalty, but I thought the ref was going to give it.

“We were unfortunate to go down to ten men, I thought. it was a very harsh decision, but we showed what all good teams do – we stayed strong.

“When we went down to ten men, we all had to dig in, so it was a great team performance and we could have nicked it. These are hard games, not many teams go to Stevenage and come away with anything. Looking back at it, with the man sent off, it seemed a good point, and we just hope it will be a good point at the end of the season.”

And Chapman had special praise for three key players, at both ends of the pitch.

“Big Motty and Fozzie were brilliant with their headers and Beano (James Constable) again worked unbelievably hard, as he does every week.

“He’s an honest player, he never gives less than 110 per cent.”

Histon boss Steve Fallon says his players are under no illusion as to how difficult it will be to claim a play-off spot.

After holding Stevenage to a 0-0 draw at home last week, he said: “It’s going to be tough for us because we’re battling some really big clubs.”

The Stutes still have to play Burton and Kidderminster, as well as Oxford, but still look to be in a very good position.
