There could still be plenty of twists and turns in the battle for the play-offs – and although the table might not look good at the moment, the picture could be very different in two weeks’ time.

So many of the leading sides have to play each other that the top teams will inevitably drop points along the way.

Oxford probably do need to come up with five wins and a draw, as a minimum require-ment, from their last six games, which would give them 80 points.

That in itself is a very tough ask, because it relies on them beating Histon and winning at relegation-threatened York and Woking, which will not be easy.

But if they could do that, and get a draw at Burton, who may have won the title by the time the U’s arrive on April 17, it could set up a thrilling final day of the season.

Tomorrow, rivals Kidderminster and Stevenage face each other at Aggborough, and the two of them lock horns again at Stevenage on April 21.

Saturday, April 18 will also be crucial.

That’s when Stevenage are at home to Torquay, and Kidderminster visit Histon.

Indeed, Kidderminster face a daunting finish.

Their final four games are against Burton, Histon, Stevenage and Kettering.

Histon should make it comfortably, even if they come unstuck at Oxford and Burton, because they have a run of four games, three of them looking relatively easy.

U’s fan Dick Barton is convinced Chris Wilder’s men can do it.

He said: “Two years ago, in 2007, York and Exeter reached the play-offs with 80 and 78 points respectively. Last year Burton got into the play-offs with 81 points.

“Oxford might need to win five and draw one, which would give them 80.

“Although Kettering have two games in hand, they must play eight matches in the final 23 days of the season, with a comparatively small squad.

“Is it likely they can win all or most of those games in hand in such a short space of time, without picking up injuries?

“All of Oxford’s rivals face tough matches against other top-of-the-table teams. So anything could happen.”
