Oxfordshire golf professional Paul Simpson is offering readers of the Oxford Mail the chance to be his caddie in one of the world’s biggest tournaments.

You could be carrying the 38-year-old’s bag at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on May 21-24.

Simpson, who lives in Witney, is auctioning off the job of his caddie at the PGA European Tour’s flagship event.

The successful bidder will carry Simpson’s bag for two practice rounds and the first two rounds proper at Wentworth — as well as the final two rounds if the Oxfordshire man makes the cut, or free entry to the last 36 holes if he does not.

The winning bidder will also get a free playing round over Wentworth’s famous West Course three weeks before the event and, if he or she wishes, their company’s name on Simpson’s bag during the event.

Half of the money Simpson receives from the eBay auction will go to the special baby care unit at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital, with the other half going towards his playing expense for the season.

Simpson is the father of three young boys — Joe, 12, Ben, nine, and Dan, seven — two of whom were born at the JR.

He said: “I have given money to the special baby care unit from previous charity events that I have organised. They do great work and the money doesn’t go on administration — it all goes on making a difference.”

He has also pledged to donate 25 per cent of any winnings to the Berkshire Community Foundation, a charity that supports small community groups.

Simpson, who is the professional at West Berks Golf Club, near Newbury, earned his place at Wentworth by winning the English PGA Championship at Moortown last summer.

A former pupil at Witney’s Henry Box School, he was a member of the PGA European Tour in the mid-1990s. His best finish was ninth at the 1993 Austrian Open.

He has played in the PGA at Wentworth on a number of occasions and has made the cut once.

The successful bidder must be over 16 years of age and must be able to carry a large golf bag.

The eBay auction runs from April 3 to 12. Details can be found on www.paulsimpsonpgapro.co.uk
