Oxford Cavaliers will be fielding an under 19 team for the first time this summer.

The club, who play in the Rugby League Conference (RLC), have also announced their new base will be Stratfield Brake.

Cavaliers coach Mark Shaw said: “We are responding to a growing interest in youth players to take up rugby league.

“This marks the next level in the club’s development as the under 19 team will act as a feeder into the open age team and strengthen our position in the RLC competition.”

Cavaliers will again have Oxford & Cherwell Valley College (OCVC) as their main sponsor.

They hope to secure promotion from the London & South East division of the RLC.

John Connaughton will captain the side, bringing experience to the pack alongside Ben Louisson and Chris Clifford.

Former double rugby league varsity match winner Tom Waterfield returns in a pivotal half-back role, along with last year’s player of the season George Symonds.

Cavaliers chairman Matt Walsh said: “The results on the pitch and the interest in rugby league in the area led to our decision to expand the club and field two teams in 2009.

“Our goal is to win our division title, although we expect tough competition from Greenwich Admirals and Kent Ravens.”

Training has already begun at Stratfield Brake on Wednesdays from 7pm and new players are welcome.
