Saxton Rovers celebrated their 50th anniversary by winning the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup in dramatic style on Saturday.

Two goals in the last three minutes, including a stunning winner from Chris Hooper, earned the North Berks League side an historic 2-1 win over Steeple Claydon in the final at Buckingham Town.

It looked like unbeaten Saxton, who are within sight of the North Berks Division 1 title, would be left empty-handed.

After a goalless first half, Steeple Claydon took the lead on 68 minutes when a header by Micky Carroll was adjudged to have crossed the line, despite Hooper’s attempted clearance.

But in the 89th minute, Paul Churchouse levelled from the penalty spot after Steve Pitson was pushed.

With everyone anticipating extra time, another ball into the box found Hooper on the right edge of the six-yard box with his back to goal.

His overhead shot dropped into the far corner of the net.

There was further joy for North Berks League clubs when AFC Benson reached the final of the Oxfordshire Junior Shield with a 1-0 win over Brize Norton, thanks to a close range strike from Nick Skiller.

The final against Spartan Rangers will be played at Witney United on April 25.
