Oxford City’s Hannah England believes she can still qualify for the European Indoor Championships, despite missing out in Sunday’s trials in Sheffield.

The 21-year-old finished second to Susan Scott in the final in 4mins 12.99secs, but despite scooping the silver medal, she was just under two seconds outside the qualifying mark needed to book her ticket to Turin next month.

She now heads to this weekend’s Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham in a last-ditch attempt to make the grade.

But after the heartbreak of missing out on last year’s Oly-mpics in Beijing, England is confident she can catch the selectors eye.

She said: “It’s annoying not to have the time after the trials, but I hope to nail it this week. The time was just outside my indoor personal best.

“But it was a fun race and it was great to get some competitive running under my belt.

“I think both me and Susan are easily capable of hitting the qualifying mark in Birmingham.

“My training over the winter has been a bit restricted, and that’s been a bit of a problem.

“But it could be a blessing in disguise as I haven’t got too sharp too soon.”

Former Radley ace Lucy Boggis was delighted with her victory in the 60m hurdles B final.

Boggis was competing at a major event for the first time, and achieved what she had hoped to do by lowering her personal best by 0.02secs to clock 8.65 for first place.

Boggis said: “It was a shame I didn’t make the A final, because I would have finished about sixth in that with the time I did in the B final.

“I wasn’t expecting a pb to come my way, although I wanted it to.

“I had a really awful start – my reaction out of the blocks was dreadful.

“Had it been better, my pb would have come down even more.”

Meanwhile, Radley’s Carolyn Plateau underlined her burgeoning potential with a season’s best time in the 800m.

The 20-year-old, who clocked 2.10.51 to finish fourth in the B final, has now set her sights on European glory at the under-23 championships in Lithuania later this year.

“I’ve had a few years of horrible injuries, so it will be nice to try and set the track alight this year,” she said.

“Lithuania is the main target for me outside this year and the way I’ve been running, there is no reason why I can’t go there and do well.”
