Whatever happens in 2009, Eddie Pepperell plans to end the year with a bid to turn professional.

Pepperell, who cut his handicap from plus two to plus three in 2008, said: “I definitely want to do it.

“I’m not too sure when I want to go professional.

“If I make the Walker Cup and have a good tournament, then a lot of things open up from there.

“I will go to European Tour qualifying school at the end of the year.

“If I did make it then I would take my tour card, but if not it will be a good experience.”

Seeing young guns Rory McIlroy and Ollie Fisher make quick transitions to pro golf has given Pepperell extra confidence.

He said: “I think they’ve shown that the standard between the top amateurs and the majority of pros is not that different.

“It is just a completely different lifestyle, and I think that’s what takes the time to adapt to.”

Pepperell added: “I really want to become one of the best amateurs in the world before I turn pro.

“If I don’t turn pro for a couple of years, getting to be world No 1 amateur will be a real goal.

“That would hope me get more sponsorship.”
