Oxford United are now focusing on the FA Trophy as the competition in which they can most realistically savour success this season.

The league registration form fiasco does not have any effect on this competition, with the U’s only entering it in December, once Eddie Hutchinson had been re-registered.

Financially, the Trophy is important for the U’s. Tonight’s second-round winners receive £5,000 and the team that goes on to win it at Wembley will have banked £88,000 in prize-money by the time they do their lap of honour.

Manager Chris Wilder will have Ricky Sappleton, Adam Chapman and Shane Killock making their full debuts in the second round tie against York City at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Both Chris Willmott and Adam Murray are suspended, so Killock takes over from Willmott and, if he’s fit to return, there’s a chance that Joe Burnell may come in for Murray.

There had been a doubt over Hutchinson, who had been ill, but he now looks set to start. Chapman could also have a midfield role.

Chris Carruthers looks set to return at left back.

Wilder said: “Murray’s out, Willmott’s out, Yemi (Odubade) is touch and go, and looking at the squad it will be down to the bare bones.

“Burnell may be back, Hutch did not train at the end of last week because he had the flu, so it’s not been ideal for me, obviously with losing Sam Deering and Quinny (Barry Quinn) as well. It’s back to where we were against Ebbsfleet.

“We’ll have to look around and see what formation and what squad I’ve got available, and pick a team from that.”

However, the directness and sharpness of strikers James Constable and Sappleton excited fans in the last game and if they show anything like their form from the Salisbury match, York’s defence will be in for a tough time.

“The last two have been good results, so we have something to work on,” said United’s manager.

The extra few days, because of Saturday’s postponement, should have helped Odubade to recover from his knee injury.

York will be without fullback Ben Purkiss (stomach strain), who will be replaced by on-loan signing Kyle Critchell, from Wrexham.

Simon Rusk serves a one-match suspension.

New Shay boss Martin Foyle does not know what reception he’ll get on his first return to Oxford since he left the club 18 years ago as a player.

“It was a long time ago,” he reflec-ted. “Hopefully it will be a positive one.”

Wilder knows Foyle from many years back as well.

“Martin was a young pro at Southampton when I was an apprentice there,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to him at York, and have wished him all the best.”
