There is major concern about the welfare of greyhounds now that the end of Tuesday racing means that there is a surplus of dogs at Oxford Stadium.

Owners and trainers will be forced to find other outlets for around 40 greyhounds, who will fail to grade under the new times forced upon the racing office.

Either that, or owners face weeks without a run.

It's a worry for the Oxford branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust.

They do a magnificent job, but even in good times, it's never very easy finding the right homes for retired or unwanted greyhounds.

In addition, new greyhounds are always arriving for trials, so the position will not get any easier.

The answer in the short term may be to have more races. Even a 14-race card twice a week would take care of 24 hounds.

But whether the Stadium, or racegoers, could take it is a different matter.

l THE Michael Peterson owners all-trophy meeting on Saturday saw trainer Paul Clarke complete a hat-trick.

One of his winners dead-heated as Ringsend Rogue and Iver Posh could not be separ-ated.

Also on the mark with a threesome was Angie Kibble.

The kennel stage another all -trophy meeting tonight, while the Oxford Owners Association hold their monthly awards on Thursday.
