CHRIS Wilder has not finished in the transfer market by any means.

The new Oxford United manager, who has already this month released Jamie Guy and brought in Ricky Sappleton, Adam Chapman and Shane Killock, hopes to continue his dealing during the rest of the January transfer window.

And if players who are attracting interest are willing to go out, he has targets lined up to come in.

He admitted last night: “We’re always looking . . .

“There isn’t any fresh money – it’s possibly a one out, one in situation – and we’re looking to get value for money as well.

“We’ve missed out on a couple of players who have gone to smaller clubs in the league, but that’s the way it is at the moment, and I fully understand that.

“I’m sure the chairman will back me as much as he possibly can, but I knew the situation when I came into it. It doesn’t faze me and doesn’t give me a problem.

“But we will look to wheel and deal before the end of January and hopefully, the boys that come in and do well in the month, we may look to extend their loans till the end of the season as well.”

One player United have missed out on is 25-year-old striker Jon Shaw, who scored 21 goals for Halifax Town, under Wilder, last season.

He this week joined big-spending Crawley Town on loan from League Two Rochdale as did another U’s target Lewis Chalmers, who arrived from Aldershot.

Wilder admitted: “I spoke to Rochdale about him, but unfortunately we couldn’t do anything. He’s gone and I’m sure he’ll do well for Crawley.

“He’s got a decent record in the Conference, so he’s a player that we spoke to and would have liked to have come, but it wasn’t to be so we move on.

“We’ve got Ricky and James Constable, who’s been outstanding, but I’d like to see Yemi (Odubade) back to give us a bit more competition up front.”

United’s manager said there had been two inquiries for Oxford players and the duo had been told about them.

“There’s been a couple of bites on a couple of players,” he confirmed. “It’s up to the players to make those decisions.

“We’ll inform them, I’ll be honest regarding any interest, and we’ll just have to see what develops, but hopefully there will be a bit of movement.”

Sappleton, Chapman and Killock will all start against York tomorrow, if the game goes ahead.

But Wilder says fans should not expect him to be a match-winner every week after his stunning entrance against Salisbury on New Year’s Day.

“Ricky’s done superbly well. Confidence-wise he’s at a good stage, and hopefully he can kick on,” he said.

“But don’t expect all my signings to be like that and to come off that quickly!”

Wilder added: “Supporters have got to realise that all the boys that we’ve brought in are young and they’ll need the support and help of the crowd because the confidence of a young player is easily broken.

“But I’m sure the reception Ricky got after his performance will stand him in good stead and run into the other two boys as well.”
