BURFORD, county under 14 rugby champions last year, made it back-to-back triumphs by lifting the Oxfordshire Under 15 Cup with a 17-8 win over Lord Williams’s (Thame) on finals day at Chinnor RFC.

A tight encounter saw Lord Williams’s take the lead with a penalty by centre George Blewitt.

But then a great try from Deaglan Bayliss saw Burford edge 5-3 ahead at half-time.

Harvey Turner crossed the Lord Williams’s line to increase Burford’s lead in the second half.

Lord Williams’s hit back with winger Tom Lowe passing inside for Blewitt to sprint over and make it 10-8.

The match could have gone either way, but Burford sealed victory late on with a converted try by Max Outteridge.

Cokethorpe (Witney) captured the Oxfordshire Under 19 Cup for the first time with a commanding 26-7 win over Henley College.

Captain and centre Jake Geekie set Cokethorpe on the way with the opening try, bursting through following a setpiece scrum move. Fly half George Lewis converted.

With Cokethorpe’s forwards controlling affairs, they went further ahead with a try from full back Jonny Morris, which was again converted by Lewis.

Henley had no answer to Cokethorpe’s attacking play, and Lewis made it 19-0 with an unconverted try before half-time.

Cokethorpe sealed victory with their fourth try in the second half.

After a sustained period of pressure in the Henley 22, Morris crossed the line for a second time, with Lewis again landing the conversion.

Henley opened their account with a converted try in the closing minutes, but it couldn’t stop Cokethorpe avenging their 27-18 final defeat of two years ago.

Captain and centre Ollie Wingfield stole the show with a hat-trick of tries to take Lord Williams’s to a 24-10 win over Gillott’s (Henley) in the Oxfordshire Under 14 Cup final.

Wingfield’s first came after the forwards had won good ball, and hooker Tommy Evans slotted the conversion.

Gillott’s came back strongly and reduced the deficit with a try.

A sustained spell of Lord Williams’s pressure then paid off with centre Dominic Bradbrook-Taylor crashing over to make it 12-5 at half-time.

As Gillott’s started to tire in the second half, Lord Williams’s took advantage and Wingfield side-stepped a number of challenges on a mazy run from the halfway line for his second try.

And he completed his hat-trick with another brilliant run, touching down under the posts for Evans to convert and make it 24-5.

Gillott’s kept battling, though, and were rewarded with a late try.

But it couldn’t deny Lord Williams’s victory, which proved a fitting finale for full back Nick Roberts before he emigrates to Australia.

Meanwhile, Burford Under 13s were crowned county champions with a 10-0 victory over Cherwell (Oxford) at Stratfield Brake, Kidlington.

Matthew Barker scored a breakaway try from the back of a scrum to give Burford the lead, and three minutes later Harry Puffit intercepted a pass and raced in from the halfway line.

Burford also beat Cooper (Bicester) 10-0 in the semi-finals after defeating all of their rivals in their pool games.

They conceded just one try in the tournament and only 15 points in the entire season, which also saw them capture the district shield.

With the under 15s going on to win the county cup, it made it a memorable season for the west Oxfordshire school.
