FA Carlsberg Vase

WITNEY United boss Andy Lyne hopes that his players will put on another stirring cup performance as they bid for a place in the last 32 of the FA Vase at home to Buckingham Town on Saturday.

Witney have won twice on the road so far in this season’s competition, and are playing in the third round for the first time in their short history.

But victory would give Witney a place in the national stage of the competition – and dreams of Wembley.

The Vase was in Witney, visiting local schools and Witney Town Hall, as part of a Football Association roadshow, and Lyne hopes his players will be inspired by a large crowd at the Polythene UK Stadium.

He said: “It’s been more than a month since we last played at home, and I’m looking for our supporters, who have followed us everywhere, to get behind us.

“I hope that after this week’s FA Vase tour of Witney, we will get a big crowd in for the game.”

Witney beat Buckingham 2-0 in the FA Cup this season, but Lyne insists that they will be a tough nut to crack.

He said: “It’s a huge achievement for my players to get this far, but they are hungry for more.

“But Buckingham will be very dangerous opponents and have a very knowledgeable manager in Tony Joyce.

“This run is putting some much-needed money in the coffers, and hopefully we can keep this going.”

Jon Steedman is unavailable, although Andy Younie returns, as do strike duo Ben Thompson and Gary Wickens.

Witney Utd (v Buckingham Tn, home): from Beames, Barrett, Smith, Henderson, Wallbridge, Woodley, Byfield, Lewis, Jamie Mills, JP Mills, McMahon, Burnley, Younie, Curtin, Thompson, Wickens.
