Oxford City’s Hannah England has been called up for the Norwich Union Great Britain & Northern Ireland under 23 team that will compete at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium, on December 14.

England earned the call up after producing the qualifying time in an 8.1km trial race at the McCain UK Cross Challenge meeting in Liverpool, where she finished 14th in the senior women’s race and fourth in the under 23 age group.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting to run as well as I did. I’ve been training well, but haven’t been able to race because of injuries and illnesses.

“I’m really excited, because it’s the first time I will run for Britain over cross country.

“I'm not sure what my aim for the event is, but as a team we are in the running to win.”

She will join fellow Oxfordshire athlete Hatti Dean on the start line in Brussels, who will complete for the senior women’s team.

Elsewhere, Melissa Hawtin finished 16th in the junior women’s race and fifth in the under 17 category, while Josh Tack was 14th in the under 13 boys’ event.
