Chinnor will hope this result and performance on Saturday are not the start of a downward spiral that leads to relegation from National 3 South.

But if they play as dismally as this, with some fans calling it the worst display in recent memory, then South West 1 is where they are heading.

That is not to take anything away from basement boys Havant, whose will to win was evident as they secured their first victory of the season.

But it is a rare day on which you can get away with gifting two interception tries, which is what Chinnor did in an error-strewn display.

There are 15 games and more than half the season to go, so it is not time to press the panic button.

But Chinnor need to be tougher mentally, show more composure, and not force the play if they are to retain the National League status their combined skill merits.

Chinnor fly half Ben Hewitt and Havant wing Keith Molyneux missed a penalty apiece before the visitors went ahead on 17 minutes.

No 8 Harry Heasman ploughed over all too easily, with Molyneux converting.

Chinnor had plenty of play in the Havant 22, but their only score came from Hewitt’s 25th-minute penalty, which followed a yellow card for fly half Wayne John.

Despite being a man down, Havant bagged another try – as they did in the second half.

Centre Greg Sullivan pounced on a loose pass to run in an easy five points after scrum half Liam Davenport’s kick had caused problems.

Molyneux added the conversion, while all that Chinnor could manage with the wind behind them was a second Hewitt penalty, so it was 12-6 at the break.

Hewitt looked to have gifted Molyneux an interception try on 48 minutes, but the Havant man was denied by a superb covering tackle from Chinnor scrum half Toby Prescott.

The visitors, however, worked the ball to the right where lock Nick Morris eventually went over.

Chinnor gave themselves hope when they finally retained possession through a series of phases, allowing Richard Williams to cross on the left. Hewitt converted.

That was after 53 minutes, and for the next quarter of an hour, Chinnor had their best spell of the match.

They looked set to push on again when Heasman was yellow-carded for an illegal tackle on Dave Jackson after 70 minutes.

But Havant were soon celebrating an interception try for wing Chris Thompson, which Molyneux converted.

Chinnor’s best chance to close the gap saw flanker-turned-winger Angus Neilson recalled for a forward pass, but they never looked capable of a late recovery.

Hewitt was taken to hospital after the match for treatment on a head injury, but later released.
