Oxford City moved eight places up the British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division table with a 3-2 win against ten-man Yate Town on Tuesday night.
The visitors went ahead on two minutes when defender Andy Gunn netted from close range after Andy Baird touched on Mark Bell’s free-kick.
Alan Judge made a great save to deny Michael Wiitingham before Yate’s Dean Griffiths was sent off for a second booking.
Two minutes into the second half, Michael Lyon doubled City’s lead from an acute angle.
Although Scott Brice pulled one back for Yate, Darren Pond’s 80th-minute penalty after Baird was brought down in the area, gave City a 3-1 lead.
Nick McCootie headed Yate’s second, but City held on for a valuable victory.
Banbury United went down to a 2-0 defeat at Tiv-erton Town.
Banbury were undone by a Phil Walsh double.
He headed his first on 41 minutes when he climbed above the Banbury defence to head home.
The closest the visitors came to scoring was when a shot from Nicky Gordon was brilliantly kept out by the Tiverton keeper.
Walsh grabbed his second on 61 minutes, with a carbon copy of his first, getting his head to a cross.
Hook Norton’s FA Vase second-round replay trip to VTFC was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
No new date has yet been announced.
