Vale of White Horse Under 15s came within 90 seconds of upsetting South London in the English Schools’ FA Trophy third round at Herne Hill before bowing out 4-2 after extra time.

South London, comprising the boroughs of Lambeth, Wandsworth, Southwark and Lewisham, had a vastly greater number of boys to choose from, while Vale were without skipper Oliver Taylor, who was required by Wycombe.

Playing against the wind in the first half, Vale took the lead when a corner from Ben Whitehead was sidefooted home at the far post by Chris Avery.

South London equalised early in the second half with a goal that looked at least five yards offside.

Whitehead broke through the middle to restore Vale`s lead, before Ryan Tappin crashed a shot from 20 yards against the underside of the bar, with the ball then hitting the prostrate keeper on the back and stopping on the line.

South London equalised with 90 seconds remaining, and then scored again early in extra time.

The hosts added a fourth, although goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell appeared to be fouled as he went for the ball.

Vale of White Horse Under 11s slipped out of the Witney Cup with a 4-1 defeat by Newbury & District at Woolton Hill Junior School.

Facing a stiff breeze and playing up the slope in the first half, Vale defended well to keep a clean sheet until the first minute of time added on when Newbury took the lead.

Harry Denton equalised with a cracking drive soon after the break, but a Henry Helas own goal and two more Newbury strikes saw the hosts take victory.

John Mason (Abingdon) were crowned the Vale of White Horse Under 12 girls five-a-side champions at Wantage Leisure Centre.

They took the title with a 3-1 win over Langtree (Woodcote), who needed only a draw to take the crown, in the final game of the tournament, which was played on a league basis.

Sophie Baker, Jennifer Dingwall and Corinna Bage scored for John Mason, with Georgie Turner replying.
