Henley Hawks bounced back from two straight defeats to win 34-5 at National 3 South basement boys Havant and notch a bonus point.

Hawks were frustrated by Havant’s spoiling tactics, especially in the second half, but had the game won by the break.

On 12 minutes, full back Ralph Smith, who joined the attack effectively throughout, put centre Neil Baggett away for his sixth try of the season.

Fly half Tommy Turner converted this, plus the other three tries and two penalties in a solid display.

Smith broke through in midfield to create the second try for No 8 Jack Hennings, who sprinted clear.

Havant came more into the game as they tested Henley’s defence, particularly when No 8 Harry Heasman, their most effective player, was only stopped on the 22 by a devastating tackle by Smith.

Turner’s second penalty made it 20-0 after 34 minutes.

Henley then took advantage of a yellow card to Heasman with scrum half James Gaunt picking up and diving over.

Havant hooker Stephen Cruddas was driven over their solitary try just after the break.

But Henley sealed a fifth point on 50 minutes with Gaunt and Smith setting up centre Danny Wells for a try.

Chinnor were undone by second-placed Ealing’s pace in a 46-26 away defeat, but still produced an encouraging display.

Fly half Ben Hewitt put the visitors ahead with a fourth-minute penalty and made it 6-5 after a try from Ealing centre Joe Price.

Full back Peter Hodgkinson was next to cross from Ealing.

Alex Wallace almost created a try for Chinnor, but a third Hewitt penalty saw them trail 10-9 at the break Scrum half Tom Parker ran in a third try for Ealing, with fly half Ben Ward converting.

Chinnor hooker Arthur Ellis reacted quickly to set up a score for supporting scrum half Toby Prescott, which Hewitt converted.

A purple patch saw Ealing score three tries in five minutes through wing David Howells (2) and Price, with Ward converting two.

Tries from Wallace and Prescott brought it back to 36-26.

Ealing wing Neville Edwards and Chinnor lock Matt Hutchings were sin-binned in separate incidents.

Ward added a penalty and converted Howells’ hat-trick try to complete the scoring.
