HOCKEY: Oxford Hawks finally recorded their first Premier Division 1 win of the season in style by thumping Tulse Hill and Dulwich 6-1 at Banbury Road North.

The win moves them off the bottom of the table.

It was no coincidence that Hawks were at last able to field their strongest side, welcoming back Tim Martin, Nick Ferraby and Andy Brown.

Hawks played some fast and incisive hockey.

Goals came at regular intervals with Tom Coppin putting them ahead from a well-worked short corner.

Aussie Pete Forshaw then scored his first goal for Hawks with a fierce shot.

The influential Nick Ferraby got on the scoresheet with a short-corner strike and a penalty stroke.

And further goals for Coppin and a ferocious strike from youngster Tom Sobey completed Hawks’ best day for some weeks.

The visitors managed a consolation goal in response.

Banbury moved up to third with a last-minute Adrian Simons short-corner goal giving them a 3-2 victory over Oxford University.

Leading scorer Simon Boardman put them ahead in the second minute.

Will Kellett converted Dan Smyth’s pass to double Ban-bury’s lead yet the visitors hit back with a strong drag flick at a short corner, then a controversial equaliser.

But Simons kept his cool to fire in the winner.

Rover Oxford crashed to a 6-0 defeat at British Airways in the Regional league.

It started badly for depleted Rover as Gwyn Williams tur-ned the ball into his own net and never really got better.

City of Oxford, one down early on, recovered to beat Phoenix & Ranelagh 3-2 in Division 1.

They started to get on top soon after falling behind and the returning Simon Harr-ison equalised in the 12th minute.

David Layen then pounced to put City 2-1 in front.

Harrison missed a penalty flick but a third from Andy Small wrapped it up, Phoenix getting a late second back.

City of Oxford were missing Chris Brougham, who has just missed out on England U18 selection, though he has been named as one of the reserves.

Abingdon staged a superb second-half fightback to pull back a 3-0 half-time deficit, but lost 5-4 at Marlow.

Ron Smith, Will Trigg and Matt Way scored in the comeback but Marlow regained the lead at a penalty corner.

Although Owen Blackburn levelled again, Marlow’s Gar-eth Baber intercepted a loose clearance to snatch victory ten minutes from time.

Wallingford continued their good run with a 3-0 win over Aylesbury at Hithercroft in Division 1.

Tim Chamberlain opened the scoring and Angus Jones notched No 2 with a fantastic piece of individual skill.

Goalkeeper Ed Watson made some great saves to earn Wallingford’s first clean sheet of the season, and James Bryce wrapped it up.
