OXFORD United boss Gary Rowett is excited by the ‘huge potential’ that Tyler Goodrham has following the attacker’s stunning winner in midweek.
The 22-year-old collected a pass from Tom Bradshaw more than 35 yards from goal and then took a couple of touches to steady himself before unleashing a wicked right-footed strike which flew over Colchester United goalkeeper Matt Macey in the Carabao Cup first round tie.
Goodrham lined up as one of two attacking midfielders, alongside Siriki Dembele, as Rowett opted for a bold 3-1-4-2 formation against their Sky Bet League Two opponents.

Rowett said of Goodrham: “There’s a real potential player in there. We spoke to Tyler about what we think he needs to do better to perhaps impact even more.
“I felt as though rolling in off the left would get him on his right foot into those positions. He’s found that quite difficult to get into those goalscoring positions as often as we’d like, but he’s done that quite a number of times in training this pre-season. He’s looked very dangerous from those sorts of areas.
“It’s an example of what you guys all know, and what the fans all know, that he’s got not just huge potential, but he’s been performing really well for the club over the last few years.
“What you want to do is see if we can help him to kick on again and moments like that will certainly give him the opportunity.”
Discussing the wonder strike scored by Goodrham against Colchester on Tuesday night, Rowett said: “It’s one of those ones where you just whip it with a little bit of pace as well and also the direction.
“I would imagine that nine times out of 10, you get into that position at any level of any football, and the player doesn’t quite find the far corner.
“It was really nice that he managed to do that. It was a good bit of quality. I just felt as though if we’d have shown not necessarily that level of quality, but a couple more moments.
“We just don’t seem to be able to find those passes to finish off the moves at the moment, but it’s early season.”
