Jamaica lost their Copa America opener to Mexico with Greg Leigh playing a full game for the Reggae Boyz.

It was a thunderous strike from Mexico’s left-back Gerardo Arteaga in the 69th minute which was enough to start their tournament at the NRG Stadium in Texas with three points.

West Ham’s Michail Antonio thought he had given Jamaica the lead in the 50th when he headed home from close range only for VAR to rule his effort for offside.

Mexico captain Edson Álvarez was forced off in the first half with a hamstring injury and will now undergo tests in the next couple of days to assess whether his tournament is over or not.

Jamaica's next fixture, on Wednesday (June 26), sees them take on Ecuador who also lost their first game in Group B to Venezuela.

Ecuador lost their all-time top goal scorer Enner Valencia as he received a straight red card for a dangerous high foot in the 22nd minute.

However, it was the Ecuadorians who took the lead in the 40th minute but Venezuela mounted a second half.

Goals from Jhonder Cadiz and Eduard Bello in a 10-minute period were enough for them to win their opening game.

Unlike the Euros, no third-place teams go through to the knockout stages meaning Jamaica's clash with Ecuador is vital if they want to progress.

The tournament has four groups of four teams making up the group stage with the top two sides from each group moving on to the quarter-finals.
