GREG Leigh was delighted to get back on the scoresheet after playing a more defensive role for Oxford United.

The left back began his U’s career on fire, with three goals in his first full month seeing him named Sky Bet League One’s player of the month for September.

Another two strikes came over the following three games, before he suffered a calf injury in November, while on international duty with Jamaica.

That ruled him out until the middle of January, by which point Des Buckingham had been appointed head coach, to replace Liam Manning, who left for Championship side Bristol City.

Tweaks in style mean Leigh isn’t as involved further forward for United, but he managed to pop up with a late winner against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

He said: “The tactics of how we get forward are different. We play with two high wingers, so that renders my position a little bit further back.

“I’m probably a bit more defensive, and before, when I was playing with people like Billy [Bodin] and Tyler [Goodrham], who roll in a lot, that was our tactic.

“It means I can’t get as high, and it’s just the way the team is playing. I’m happy to do both sides of the game. At the end of the day, I play what I’m asked to do.

“I think I can do both. I like to go forward, and try to get goals and assists, and do that sort of stuff, but if the game requires me to a bit more defensive and play in a deeper position, then I can do that as well.”

On his late header against the Robins, he said: “It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, and when it makes a difference to the result, it’s even sweeter.

“It’s not often you get two chances at the end of the game, so I was just happy to get one more chance, and to be able to bury it.

“It was really good play, and Owen [Dale] is one of them where I know the cross is coming in.”
