AIDAN Elliott-Wheeler was sent off as Banbury United slipped into the Vanarama National League North relegation zone.

The 17-year-old, on loan at the Puritans from Oxford United, was shown a straight red card after 21 minutes, when he committed a foul as the last man, as away side Peterborough Sports went through on goal.

Fellow U’s loanee Josh Johnson made his debut for the Puritans, and both he and Elliott-Wheeler had early attempts, before the red card for the latter.

The away side then took the lead 10 minutes later through Dan Jarvis, before Mark Jones and Rory McAuley scored at either end of the second period.

The defeat sent the Puritans down to 21st in the table, although with at least one game in hand on all the teams around them, aside from bottom club Bishop’s Stortford.

Banbury manager Kevin Wilson told Puritans Radio: “The sending off is a big turning point in the game because I thought we started the first 20 minutes really well.

“These things happen in football and at the present moment, we’re not getting the breaks.

“He’s clean through on goal, and you can’t really say it’s not. We would’ve been shouting for it.”
