DES Buckingham is looking forward to the selection headache now he has players returning from injury to pick from.

The likes of Joe Bennett, Sam Long, Billy Bodin, Josh Murphy and Will Goodwin have all made their Oxford United returns in the last two games, having previously been unavailable due to injury.

It means U’s head coach Buckingham is faced with decisions to make when it comes not just to his starting line-up, but who to leave out of the squad.

For the midweek win at home to Wigan Athletic, Stephan Negru, Josh McEachran, James Henry and Goodwin were all left out of the matchday squad completely, although with the latter, it was a case of protecting his minutes after recovering from a quad injury.

Buckingham said: “It’s certainly the better of the headaches, to be able to have the headache now of who do we pick for these games.

“It’s not so much the XI, but the bench and those players who won’t feature in the squad.

“They’re certainly problems that you like to have, than what we’ve had to deal with.

“Conversations will take place before the game, and it’s about making sure we pick what we feel is the right team to get the result.”

Next up for United is the short trip to Wycombe Wanderers, to take on a side sitting 15th in Sky Bet League One, and just six points above the relegation zone.

Prior to their midweek defeat at promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers, the Chairboys won two on the bounce, including their last game on home soil, when they hammered high-flying Peterborough United 5-2.

Oxford Mail:

Buckingham said: “I’m expecting a very tough game. It’s always been a difficult place for us to go, and they’ve picked up of late, which seems to be case for every team we play.

“We’re off the back of four games unbeaten and a good 4-2 win on Tuesday night.

“They’ve got a way that they want to play, that’s very clear. We’ll set up as well as we can to deal with that.

“But as I’ve said since I’ve come here, it’s about making sure we do what we want to, as much as we can.

“We’ll be respectful of the opposition and aware of their threats, but we need to focus on ourselves, whether that’s us out of possession and how we want to press, or sit in our block, but more so what we do with the ball.

“That was the thing missing from Tuesday in the first half, with the ball, and it’s something we need to make sure we get right on Saturday, to be able to pin those halves together.”
