OXFORD United Women’s seven-game winning run came to a halt as they were beaten 5-1 at home to league leaders Portsmouth.

The visitors led 3-0 at half-time and added a fourth goal five minutes into the second period.

Tash Stephens scored on her second U’s debut, but Pompey restored their four-goal advantage in stoppage time.

Paris Sercombe made early saves from Emma Jones and Georgie Freeland, but she was finally beaten when former United winger Daisy McLachlan got on the end of a deep cross.

The lead was doubled on the half hour mark, when a Portsmouth corner was cleared as far as Ava Rowbotham, who struck home from 30 yards.

Rowbotham added a second in stoppage time with another lob from distance.

The away side extended their lead when Freeland had plenty of space on the right, to pick her spot in the far corner.

The U’s pulled a consolation goal back after Zoe Barratt’s cross was bundled in by Stephens.

United came close to another goal with eight minutes to go, when Vitalia Budaieva burst into the penalty box and saw her shot touched onto the post by Pompey goalkeeper Hannah Haughton, who then denied Budaieva from the rebound.

The U’s were caught on the break in injury time though, as Portsmouth right back Nicole Barrett ensured the away side restored their four-goal advantage.

United sit fourth in Southern Premier Division, and are next in action on February 21 when they host Rugby Borough Women.
