SONNY Perkins has been recalled by his parent club as Oxford United close in on a new striker.

Perkins’ loan spell from Leeds United failed to work out, with the 19-year-old playing just six times in all competitions.

His last appearance was in the 2-0 defeat at Cheltenham Town on November 25, one of just three Sky Bet League One games he featured in.

The forward played just five minutes of league football for the U’s after joining on a season-long loan at the end of August.

Perkins leaves having scored just one goal for United, the opener in the 5-0 win at home to Chelsea Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.

Mark Harris has been the preferred option to play up front for the U’s this season, with Gatlin O’Donkor his reserve from the bench.

Meanwhile, the U’s are edging in on the signing of a new centre forward, with head coach Des Buckingham saying it’s possible the player could be signed in time for United’s trip to Coventry City in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.

Asked about the club signing a new striker, Buckingham said: “Hopefully in the next couple of days. I don’t want to say anything too soon because it’s not done, but we are close.”
