DES Buckingham was delighted with the reaction his Oxford United players showed to bounce back from a late defeat – by stealing a late win of their own.

The U’s were beaten at Northampton Town on Saturday, conceding seven minutes into stoppage time.

However, Buckingham’s side displayed resilience to come from behind at home to Cambridge United, and claim all three points courtesy of Ciaron Brown’s 95th winner.

Jordan Cousins had given Cambridge a half-time lead during a first 45 minutes where the hosts struggled to get a grip on the game.

Tyler Goodrham’s sweet effort nine minutes into the second half brought the U’s level, before Brown produced the dramatic late heroics.

United head coach Buckingham said: “It’s a lot better place than it was for the last 30 seconds of the last game we played.

“We’re in a very good space and it was a nice way to finish off the game for everybody.

“In the first half, I thought we needed to move the ball quicker and stick to what we want to do. In the second half, I was extremely pleased with the response.

“I thought we came out and we were sharper with the ball, and we created several chances, but we just couldn’t get the ball in the net.

“It took until the 95th minute to get that winner, but if we keep working on it, we’ll make sure we can tie the other bits and pieces up, to make it a bit more free-flowing for the full 90.”

He added: “The more we get to know each other, and don’t get caught up in the highs and lows, I know what needs to be done.

“I know that some of the football we’ve played has been good, but I know there’s a lot more that we need to do.

“I know exactly where we’re at and what we need to do, to make sure we get to where we want to get to.

“I won’t get too carried away with the loss we had in the last game, just like I won’t get too carried away with this win. It’s about making sure we prepare and get ready for the next one.”

James Henry made his 600th career appearance when he replaced Mark Harris for the final 10 minutes.

After a tough period with niggling injuries, Henry has fought his way back into United’s first team plans, and made his first league appearance of the season earlier this month in the 1-1 draw at Reading.

Buckingham said: “It’s a wonderful achievement for any player, and he’s almost had a second wind this season, certainly since I’ve come in.

“He’s reinvigorated and is really keen to come on and contribute to what we’re doing, and that’s been so important to what we do now and what we do in the future.”
