OXFORD United Women were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties, in a tie dominated by late goals.

United’s top scorer Zoe Barratt was denied by Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Jasmine Read, while Rebecca Dandridge bent a shot over at the other end as the sides exchanged early opportunities.

The U’s took the lead with the last action of the first half, with Shelly Provan’s deep cross met by Lacy Liggett at the back post, firing her volley into the roof of the net.

Provan then almost scored a goal of the season contender when her long-range strike cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and onto the goal line.

Argyle levelled matters two minutes into stoppage time, when Charlotte Whitmore broke with pace down the left and squared for Fern Orchard, who finished first-time.

Sarah King had two chances cleared off the line during extra time, but United nudged in front again in the 118th minute, when Barratt’s strike hit an arm and a penalty was awarded.

Barratt stepped up and smashed the spot kick into the top corner, however there was to be more late drama.

The hosts went down the other end, and Imy Crawford arrowed a shot from the edge of the area into the top right corner.

It took the tie to penalties, with U’s skipper Leah Burridge the only player to miss from 12 yards, meaning United were knocked out in the third round.
