GREG Leigh may be out of action with his calf injury for slightly longer than initially anticipated.

The 29-year-old left back was initially sidelined for ‘at least a couple of weeks’ with the injury he picked up while on international duty with Jamaica.

It now appears though that Leigh could be missing for a larger period as Oxford United head into a gruelling December.

Between December 16 and January 1, the U’s play five games, and head coach Des Buckingham has acted swiftly to help ease the situation at left back, by snapping up free agent Joe Bennett on a short-term deal.

Providing an update on Leigh’s fitness, Buckingham said: “It’s not long-term, we’re not talking the season, but we’re eyeing up some point in December. We’re just not sure when.

“With the games we have coming, it’s important we don’t rush players back. To have that additional player coming in to support, will not only allow us a bit of time with Greg, but also to manage Ciaron [Brown], who’s been playing that position, and playing well there.”

Leigh helped Jamaica pull off a comeback against Canada and secure a place in the Concacaf Nations League finals for the first time, however he was substituted late on.
