Des Buckingham watched on as Oxford United U18s secured a place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup after a 2-0 win over Sutton United.

The recently appointed United first team head coach Buckingham attended the game on Friday evening (November 17), the day after being announced as the man to take over from Liam Manning.

Goals on the night came from Aaron Lacey and Aidan Elliott-Wheeler in a hard-fought game at Court Place Farm.

There were early chances for Leo Snowden, fresh from his senior debut, and Elliott-Wheeler before Sutton began to put pressure on the U’s backline.

However, the opening goal came for United just before halftime when Richard McIntyre delivered an inviting cross which Lacey powered home to make it 1-0.

The lead was doubled on the hour mark when Elliott-Wheeler was on hand to tap home to make it 2-0 after good work from Snowden down the right forced a save from Lenny Jones who could only parry the ball into the path of the winger.

U’s keeper Monty Marriott was called into action in the 72nd minute he got down well to make a save and ensure his clean sheet remained intact.

United are yet to concede a goal in the FA Youth Cup with a third round tie against the winners of Gillingham or Eastleigh who play on Thursday night (November 23).
