Derek Waine held his nerve as Three Horseshoes reached the first round of the Greene King Oxford & District Darts Association's Men's seven-a-side cup with a thrilling 4-3 win against Marston British Legion.

It looked all over in the preliminary round contest as Section 2 side Horseshoes took a 3-1 lead, only for the Section 3 side to level at 3-3, to set up a thrilling finale.

Earlier, wins from Steve Willoughby and Nigel Hodge saw Horseshoes stroll into a 2-0 lead.

John Dale pulled one game back for the British Legion, but when he defeated David Butler, Horseshoes restored their lead to 2-1 with a fine win from Paul Bustin.

Although Horsehoes made it 3-1, British Legion battled back to level.

However, their hopes of a remarkable comeback ended when Waine got the better of Michael Hutt.

Dave Exell won one leg in just ten darts (59, 180, 122, 40) and Kevin Wilkins enjoyed a brilliant 154 finish as Section 1 side Shears powered to a 7-0 win against Section 8 outfit Fairview Inn.

Section 6 side Bullnose Morris eased to a 6-1 victory against Vikings Social Club.

Kevin Masterson pulled one back for the visitors when he beat Tim Walton, despite Walton hitting a maximum 180.

Section 2 outfit Chequers Inn defeated Section 3 side North Oxford Conservative Club 5-2.

In the ladies' competition, Section 8 side Gladiators Social Club B pulled off a shock 5-2 win against Section 1 side Vikings Social Club in the preliminary round of the Seven-a-side Cup.

The visitors strolled into a 3-0 lead and although Vikings pulled one back, Gladiators went 4-1 in front.

Vikings' captain, Chris Gerkin, gained a consolation win, before Gladiators completed victory.
