ROSS Jenkins says new signing Renny Smith has arrived at just the right time after a build-up of injuries at Oxford City.

The addition to the Hoops squad of former Chelsea and Arsenal youth player Smith was announced shortly before the 4-0 defeat at home to Gateshead in midweek.

Smith made his debut in that game, replacing Alfie Potter for the final 20 minutes.

With fitness concerns surrounding the likes of fellow midfielders Josh Ashby and Zac McEachran in recent weeks, Smith’s arrival could not have come at a better time for City head coach Jenkins.

He said: “We’ve been quite light in training for players, with 13 the other night. That included Renny.

“We needed some bodies in the building and another body is key.

“We’re a little bit wounded but that’s not to complain – we’ve got a squad and we’ll use it.”

After two defeats on the spin, the Hoops welcome Altrincham to Court Place Farm on Saturday evening, with the 5.30pm clash being shown on TNT Sports – the rebranded BT Sport.

Smith is again likely to be involved in the matchday squad, with Jenkins highlighting his experience as a key asset.

The 26-year-old has played in Italy and the Netherlands, and was most recently at Austrian top flight side WSG Tirol.

Jenkins said: “I like to keep my eye on people abroad and what people are doing.

“I’ve known Renny since the start of pre-season and for whatever reason, it didn’t really work out, but we’ve come to the point now where it’s a good timing.

“He’ll definitely add something to us and some experience.”

Didcot Town tomorrow make the trip to Yeovil Town in the third qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Somerset outfit, who were a second tier side as recently as the 2013/14 campaign, were relegated to Vanarama National League South last season and are currently second in the table following a four-game unbeaten run.

Three league wins on the spin were sealed last weekend when Yeovil won 2-1 at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Railwaymen meanwhile, who are second from bottom in Southern League Premier South, made it to this stage of the FA Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory at home to Bristol Manor Farm.

Robbie Gallagher gave Jamie Heapy’s side the lead with 12 minutes to go, before Cameron McNeill made sure of the win when he nodded home in stoppage time.

Winning clubs at this stage will collect £5,625 from the competition’s prize fund and a place in the fourth qualifying round – the one before the first round proper. Losing clubs will still pocket £1,875.

In Southern League Central Division, eighth-placed North Leigh are at second from bottom Kempston Rovers, while Kidlington, 14th, are at 11th-placed Stotfold.
