OXFORD Speedway have their big night of the year on Friday, when they host the Championship Pairs for the second year running.

There has been much confusion over the start time, and I am pleased to confirm that the start time is definitely 7.30pm.

The meeting is the traditional starter to the British Grand Prix weekend and has been in the calendar for several years, previously hosted by the Somerset Rebels, while it has now become a fixture of the returned Oxford promotion.

Oxford will be looking to this as their first silverware and will start favourites with the strong heat leader duo of Sam Masters and Lewis Kerr lining up for the home side.

Kerr was part of last year’s winning duo when he partnered Charles Wright to bring home the trophy for Redcar.

“I am really looking forward to it. Me and Sam can do the job, we ride well together, we can ride each line, we know each other and what we like,” said Kerr.

All nine clubs are represented and there are no weak heats, it is the top boys every race.

GLASGOW: Chris Harris & Benjamin Basso; POOLE: Richard Lawson & Ben Cook; OXFORD: Sam Masters & Lewis Kerr; EDINBURGH: Craig Cook & Josh Pickering; BIRMINGHAM: Troy Batchelor & Justin Sedgmen; BERWICK: Leon Flint & Jye Etheridge; SCUNTHORPE: Ryan Douglas & Jake Allen; REDCAR: Charles Wright & Danny King; PLYMOUTH: Kyle Howarth & Richie Worrall.

There will also be a special guest on Friday, with one of the legends of Oxford Speedway returning to the club for the first time since its reopening. Marvyn Cox was last at Oxford Speedway when he was supporting Todd Wiltshire in the early 2000s.

“I am really excited, I did not expect Oxford to return,” he said.

“It is great to hear about what is going on and who can believe that Oxford are top of both leagues this year?”.

‘Cocker’ has many fans at Oxford who will be delighted to see him back at Sandy Lane.

Cheetahs Must Win Final Two

Oxford must win their final two meetings to cement their top spot and get the pick of the clubs for the play-off mini league.

Level on matches, they currently hold top spot with one point between them and second-placed Poole Pirates. Glasgow, in third spot, are four points behind and look unlikely to be able to grab top spot.

It means that Poole or Oxford can do it, and if Oxford win their remaining home match, against Scunthorpe next Tuesday, then it will all be about the away trip to Glasgow on September 8.
