OXFORD City secured an historic first win in the Vanarama National League thanks to four quickfire second half goals against visiting Boreham Wood.

The away side edged the first half proceedings, but Nya Kirby, Josh Parker, Olly Sanderson and substitute Zac McEachran fired home within a 20-minute spell on a milestone afternoon at Court Place Farm.

Kirby arrowed a wonderful, low effort from 20 yards into the bottom corner on 65 minutes, before Parker’s close-range finish, a Sanderson strike and piece of magic from McEachran won all three points for the Hoops.

Ross Jenkins made three changes to the side which held Maidenhead United to a goalless draw as Aaron Williams-Bushell, Latrell Humphrey-Ewers and Sanderson all came into the side, the former returning from injury.

Reece Fleet was absent after his partner gave birth, while Tafari Moore and Pierre Fonkeu dropped to the bench.

The first sight of goal came with six minutes on the clock when Oxford United academy graduate Tyrone Marsh clipped a lovely ball towards the back post, where Kwesi Appiah headed comfortably wide when he should’ve hit the target.

Just a couple of minutes later, Canice Carroll produced a brilliant clearance off the line when Lee Ndlovu fired a snapshot towards goal from just outside the six-yard box.

City enjoyed their first opening shortly after the quarter of an hour mark when Sanderson found himself with space in the left channel of the penalty area, however he blazed his effort high over Nathan Ashmore’s crossbar.

On 20 minutes, Ndlovu managed to turn in the box and get a shot away from 10 yards out, as he went to ground, but his effort drew a straightforward save out of Chris Haigh.

The visitors had the ball in the net when Ndlovu slid in to finish Tom Whelan’s right-wing cross, however the offside flag saved the Hoops.

Carroll’s blushes were then spared moments later when a sloppy pass found the feet of former Ghana international Appiah, however he hit the sidenetting from a relatively tight angle.

A dominant spell from the away side resulted in Marsh cracking a shot at goal from 20 yards, but the effort was too straight and Haigh was able to claim the ball with ease.

The pressure continued, with Appiah’s flicked header from a right-hand side cross floating over the bar and Ndlovu nodding over from a corner.

Towards the end of first half stoppage time, Josh Ashby sent over an inswinging left-wing free kick from deep, which Ashmore spilled as the ball looked like it was going to creep into the top corner, however a visiting defender was able to clear to safety.

Three minutes into the second period, Haigh made a brilliant, point-blank range save to thwart an Appiah header, however the linesman on the near side had his flag raised anyway.

Parker then almost grabbed a goal out of nothing when he collected the ball from deep and rifled a shot at goal from 25 yards, with Ashmore making an unconventional save to force the ball out for a City corner.

With 65 minutes played, Kirby gave Jenkins’ side the lead when he struck a brilliant effort from 20 yards into the bottom corner, leaving Ashmore with little chance of getting a glove on the ball.

Parker then forced his way into the area, but wasn’t able to find a finish from the right channel.

Jenkins made his first alteration with less than 20 minutes to go when Tafari Moore replaced Williams-Bushell.

Parker doubled the Hoops advantage with quarter of an hour to play when he scrambled the ball past Ashmore from inside the six-yard box.

Sanderson then put City 3-0 up with a smart finish on 80 minutes, as Jamal Fyfield smashed over at the other end with the goal gaping.

McEachran took full advantage to put the icing on the Hoops cake when he played a clever one-two and finished with aplomb past Ashmore.
