BANBURY United began the season with a 3-0 defeat on home soil.

Visiting side Spennymoor Town scored all their goals in a 13-minute spell during the second half.

The Moors had the ball in the back of the net after nine minutes, but it was ruled out for offside.

Glen Taylor put the away team in front with 55 minutes on the clock though, before Danny Greenfield made it 2-0 when he finished a counter-attack which started from a Banbury corner.

Moments later, Taylor completed his brace as slotted home a penalty awarded after a foul by Yonis Farah.

After the game, Puritans boss Mark Jones told the club social media channels: “Obviously we’re disappointed, we don’t like losing and its’ not the way we wanted to start the season.

“We have to take it on the chin and we have to look to improve.

“I thought we were well in the game and it was a tight game in the first half.

“We had some good moments and they did too.

“We didn’t start the second half particularly well and they pinned us in.

“We conceded that first goal fairly early in the second half and what we needed to do then was stay in the game but unfortunately we conceded the second goal pretty quickly after the first, and that took the game from us.

“We must learn from it and bounce back stronger.”
