BANBURY United have completed a double swoop as boss Mark Jones continues to build his squad ahead of the Vanarama National League North campaign.

The Puritans have signed former Sunderland Under-23 midfielder Tom Scott, while 19-year-old winger Craig Hewitt has rejoined the club.

Scott, 20, signed for the Black Cats from Northampton Town in 2021 but was released this summer after one first team appearance in the EFL Trophy.

He had one loan spell away from Sunderland at the end of last season, when he played four times for Kettering Town as they were relegated from National League North.

Scott showed his talent in the Puritans’ pre-season defeat at home to Oxford City, opening the scoring with a solo goal.

Hewitt meanwhile has also signed for Jones’ side after impressing on trial.

The wide player was released by Coventry City at the end of the 2021/22 campaign and joined Banbury in September.

He played five games for the Puritans, scoring twice, before being dual registered with North Leigh in March.

Hewitt was unable to stop the Millers’ relegation to Southern League Central Division despite finding the net three times in eight appearances.

He grabbed a goal and an assist as the Puritans beat Alvechurch 2-1 in pre-season earlier this month.
