BANBURY United have appointed former Oxford City boss Mark Jones as their new manager on a one-year contract.

Jones replaces Andy Whing, who resigned on May 22 after leading the Puritans to a historic promotion and then highest league finish last season.

Ex-Oxford United defender Whing helped Banbury win the Southern League Premier Central title by 23 points, before finishing 17th in Vanarama National League North during the 2022/23 campaign.

Jones is looking to build on Whing’s success and told the Puritans website: “I am overjoyed to be joining Banbury United.

“I can’t wait to get started and am excited by the challenge of the season ahead.

“Through the interview process, I have been impressed with the professionalism at the club and the commitment and hard work to move things forward.

“I look forward to building on what Andy Whing has created and to meeting the fans at the pre-season matches.”

Banbury chairman Ronnie Johnson added: “We have moved at warp speed to recruit the right person for this job and are delighted to welcome Mark Jones to Banbury United.

“The fit between the club, as we head into what could be a challenging season, and Mark Jones’ extensive National League football experience is incredibly strong.

“It’s been a tricky couple of weeks for everyone at the club and for much of our town, from supporters to players.”

Jones led the Hoops to the second round of the Emirates FA Cup during the 2017/18 season.

In addition to managing City, he has also taken charge of Hemel Hempstead Town in National League South, and during the 2019/20 season, he was first team coach and lead PDP coach at Yeovil Town in the National League.
